We really enjoyed sponsoring the NZSEE (New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering) Conference last week in Tākina, Wellington.
It was so great to connect with many of you and learn about your challenges.
‘Raising the Bar for Resilient Design’ was a highly relevant topic that challenges Earthquake Engineering to truly consider what’s beneath our feet.
As we have been discussing, Earthquake Strengthening design standards are changing swiftly off the back of new information on the anticipated intensity of future quakes.
What would happen to the ground beneath a building when an earthquake strikes?
And what does it mean for my Structural Design project?
Understanding the ground is what we are about, and we are ready to have these conversations with you to simplify the process.
Our team are very open to coming into your office and discussing your options for measuring Vs30, and providing you the need-to-know information to improve the resilience of your buildings.
Email or call us if you want to find out more, and to set up a meeting.

How does a degree in science play out as a career?
One of our Auckland-based Geologists, Hemanshu Soma, was honoured to present last week at The University of Auckland – Waipapa Taumata Rau STEM Conference.
Alumni asked Hemanshu to offer an overview of his academic experience for the next generation of students, sharing what a degree in Geoscience can offer.
His presentation was ‘Unlocking the Potential: Science as a Path to Sustainable and Fulfilling Careers’.
We are proud of Hemanshu for standing up and sharing his experience to encourage fresh minds into science.
If any budding Geotechs out there would like a copy then message us and we will send it out to you.

Awesome work Hemamshu!!!
Heads up for designers structural engineers – changes are coming for structural design standards for Earthquakes (relating to TS 1170.5 Structural Design Actions).
Consultation is currently in progress.
The likely upshot?
Seismic Site Class (or Vs30) assessments will be a recommended way for designers to demonstrate compliance.
This is likely to affect structural design projects to de-risk buildings and infrastructure from earthquake ground shaking.
Are you up with the play on this for your projects?
/ Learn more about the new standards here: consultations.standards.govt.nz/draft-standards/ts1170-5-public-consultation/
/ Catch us at the upcoming 2024 NZSEE Conference in Wellington 9-11 April where we will be covering this in detail: confer.eventsair.com/nzsee2024/
/ Find out about our Vs30 services here: www.rdcl.co.nz/services/seismic-site-class-assemssment-vs30/, and ask us for our ‘Options for Measuring Vs30’ guide.
At RDCL we have been conducting these assessments for over 10 years. We provide an extensive suite of testing methods appropriate for a range of sites and design options.
Our team welcome the opportunity to share this expertise with you and your team, so you can utilise this assessment tool to your project’s advantage.
Reach out for a chat any time, and ask us for our guide on Options for Measuring Vs30.

The Philippine Resources magazine is out and we have published an opinion piece calling out the importance of site investigation.
In a region where large infrastructure projects like tunnels, dams, transport corridors and flood protection are a major part of nationwide growth, it is critical to understand the ground beneath, and avoid costly mistakes.
We’ve attached the article here and here’s the full magazine for those who wish to have a read (our article on pg 51): www.philippine-resources.com/issues/issue12024/read

Developing graduates is an important part of how we build our team at RDCL.
Tim is one of our more recent recruits, who joined us last summer in the late stages of his Geology degree. Through working with us as he completed his qualification, Tim has been empowered with boots-on-the-ground experience alongside his technical studies.
Taking downhole shear wave velocity measurements (and a huge variety of other diagnostics) is all in a day’s work for our high-level graduates.
There is no shortage of work in our space and RDCL are committed to uncompromising excellence in meeting that need, deploying an expertly informed, field-ready team.
Thanks Tim, we are stoked to you have you in the crew.

Good to see the hammer swing design still being used!
