We prefer that the client pay expenses direct to save you money.
The more information you give us, and the more you commit to us, the better our prices can be. Our business is modeled on long-term relationships to deliver value to you.

Geotechnical Investigations for Residential Development in Hawke’s Bay
RDCL offers an initial FREE telephone (or office based, if you bring us your plans) consultation to assess your geotechnical requirements.
Many residential developments in Hawkes Bay require a Preliminary Geotechnical Report prior to Building Consent, and for commercial developments, often to support application for Resource Consent.
We strongly recommend that you call us; Joy Hoverd (021 288 2044), or Cam Wylie (021 543 981) before you commit to engaging geotechnical services for your residential development.
The cost of geotechnical investigation can be a “rude shock” to the average residential customer. Nobody (including us !) likes to pay for unexpected costs especially when buying that house or property is a big commitment in itself. We want you to have the information you need to make your (and our) lives easier.
As a very simple guide, the cost of (fees only) residential geotechnical investigations are
- for a bare property (or in a subdivision for which a Preliminary Geotechnical report already exists):
- $500 to $1000 + GST
- for a “simple site” (flat, rural, no access drive) for which no Preliminary Geotechnical report exists:
- $1500 to $2,500 + GST, and
- for a “difficult” site (sloping, rural, access drive) for which no Preliminary Geotechnical report exists
- $2,500 to $7,500 (or more depending on property) + GST.
All Expenses are charged in addition to the estimate for fees. Typical expenses include travel, hire of excavator to dig tests pits, hire of drill rig if required and purchase of aerial photographs. Additional expenses may be incurred depending on the project.
The more information you can give us, the better our price can be. When we cost jobs we are concerned about the “unknowns” on the site. As development moves out from the “established areas” in the Bay, we move into the hills or more difficult properties. For these sites we need to typically consider the:
- depth to foundations,
- slope stability of the site including the risk that your house will slide away, or
- that it will be buried by a landslide originating upslope of the property,
- design of retaining walls or stable cut slope angles,
- stability of fills and the suitability of cut materials for use as fill,
- presence of any “faults”,
- flood risk,
- suitability of the site for waste water disposal,
- geotechnical issues associated with establishing access onto the property, and
- special Council requirements.

Cone Penetrometer (CPT), Seismic Cone Penetrometer (SCPT), Push-Drilling Services
The cost of Cone Penetrometer, Seismic Cone Penetrometer and push-drill testing services is based on:
- an hourly rate while the rig is on site, with
- consumables and establishment in addition.
If required, specialist testing (eg. seismic, piezometric pressure) is included in the hourly rate.
