3    RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT CONTRACTORS LIMITED

3.1    SERVICES
RD Contractors Ltd provides specialist ground investigation and testing services including:

  • Direct push environmental sampling and drilling
  • Cone Penetrometer Testing (CPT(u))
  • Seismic Cone Penetrometer Testing (SCPT)
  • Inclinometer monitoring, and
  • Site investigation services.

3.2    DIRECT PUSH SAMPLING AND DRILLING
RDCL operates a Geoprobe 6600 (www.geoprobe.com) direct push rig mounted on a New Holland 180S “Bobcat” (Skid Steer) to reach difficult to access sites.  The 6600 has 20T pull-back capacity delivering approximately 16T push capacity with anchors.  Combined with a rod string including Macro-Core, piezocone CPT(u) and SCPT capability this package delivers exceptional testing capability with rugged reliability.

Push tube drilling offers significant advantages over conventional drilling particularly for shallow (20m) soil sampling and probing.  Push tube technology has been available in the US and overseas for the last 20 years, but is relatively new in New Zealand.  The main advantages are:

  • Lower cost
  • No drilling fluids to dispose of or contain,
  • No drill cuttings to dispose of, and
  • Significantly reduced set-up.

3.3    CONE PENETROMETER TESTING (CPT)
Cone penetrometer testing (CPT) offers fast, reliable and repeatable ground condition testing with digital outputs to speed processing and analysis.  RDCL operate a Geotech AB piezocone, a state-of the-art device utilising cordless technology (radio signals) for data transfer leading to better probing productivity.

CPT testing investigations have several advantages over conventional methods allowing you to better manage your risk due to ground conditions, CPT testing is:

  • Fast
  • Repeatable,
  • Lower cost,
  • Lower environmental impact

With the availability of this tool, digital processing and analytical methods there really is no reason for you not to test your ground.

3.3.1    DATA REDUCTION AND PROCESSING
RDCL uses commercial software and published procedures to reduce and process CPT data to provide a wide range of parameters for geotechnical analyses and design.
3.3.2    PIEZOCONE CPT(U)
Piezocone CPT(u) testing measures pore pressures (u) in addition to tip and friction sleeve resistance providing a “complete” suite of data for geotechnical assessment.  Cone penetrometer testing produces:

  • data in real time,
  • a continuous detailed log of ground conditions, and
  • better repeatability of measurement compared to conventional SPT (Standard Penetration Tests).

3.4    SEISMIC CONE PENETROMETER TESTING
Seismic Cone Penetrometer Testing (SCPT) is used to measure P-wave (Vp) and S-wave (Vs) velocities by running a tri-axial accelerometer downhole in conjunction with the CPT(u) probe.
The P-wave and S-waves velocities are directly related to the low strain, soil elastic constants of:

  • Poisson’s ratio,
  • shear modulus,
  • bulk modulus, and
  • Young’s modulus.

In addition the SCPT assists in:

  • Seismic site classification. NZS1170.5:2004 states that “The preferred site classification methods is from site periods based on four times the shear-wave travel time through material from the surface to underlying rock.”
  • Assessment of Liquefaction potential.

3.5    INCLINOMETER MONITORING
RDCL has a Rocscience Inclinometer probe used to locate the depth and measure the lateral displacement and deformation of soil, rock and retaining structures. It is also used to help assess the stability of slopes, embankments and dams as well as deformation of sheet pile and diaphragm walls.

3.6    HAND HELD INVESTIGATIONS
RDCL has all equipment for routine hand held geotechnical testing including:

  • Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP), or “Scala”
  • Shear Vane
  • Hand held GPS
  • Hand auger.
