Surveying The Bay Ltd (STB) (www.surveyingthebay.co.nz) is a company with specialists in land surveying and rural and urban subdivision. Locally owned, and based in Hawke’s Bay, they also perform subdivision engineering design and resource management planning. RDCL provides geotechnical services to STB as part of the execution of some of their land development projects. A close relationship is developing between the two companies. Complex subdivision developments require an integrated team approach and STB sub-contracts specialist service providers to support their clients’ projects.

STB invests heavily in technology, professional development and training. STB owns the latest in survey-accurate GPS technology, and has a permanent base station located on the roof of their building. The “iBase” technology (http://www.ibase.co.nz/) allows surveyors to access the permanent base station anywhere within the regional mobile phone network allowing fast, efficient high accuracy survey measurement. The iBase system is likely to revolutionise the way surveyors do their work and allow contractors greater access and control over their earthworks layouts and monitoring.

The company is passionate about good urban design, and encourages developer clients to incorporate best practice urban design principles in their projects. STB also promotes low impact design to help reduce effects on the environment.

STB senior staff are all Registered Professional and Licensed Cadastral Surveyors, and STB encourages professional registration of their surveyors generally. They also have a senior planner who is a member of the NZ Planning Institute. The company is actively involved with the NZ Institute of Surveyors and Consulting Surveyors of NZ and has staff representing the surveying industry at local Council review panels.
