It will be the first congress to be held outside of Australia and recognises the long history and strong dedication of NZ members since the joining the organisation in 1903.  This fantastic industry event will bring leading mining professionals to NZ and will be eagerly anticipated.

Since my last blog (7 weeks ago ) we have begun new coal mining projects in New Zealand, a copper project in the Philippines, CPT testing in Dunedin and Christchurch and finished work in Melbourne and West Australia.

And the Wylie family drove from Alice Springs via Uluru and Kakdau to Darwin in a campervan.

A big month (2 months ?) had by all !!

The pace isn’t slowing in November. RDCL is looking forward to a BIG AusIMM conference and launch of the Austmine NZ branch. Both events with which we are heavily involved. Com,e and see our booth at the Owen Glenn Building, Auckland Uni 23 – 26 November and hear our presentation at the Austmine NZ Branch launch.

RDCL company and staff are members of numerous technical societies and industry groups  representing and serve on national, branch and local committees including:

• NZ Branch committee of the AusIMM (www.ausimm.co.nz; and www.ausimm.com.au),
• ACENZ representative for Hawkes Bay (www.acenz.org.nz),
• NZ Contractors Federation Hawkes Bay regional committee (www.nzcontractors.co.nz), and
• NZ Minerals Industry Association national committee (www.minerals.co.nz)

This engagement allows us to sample widely across our markets and to understand the economic conditions in which we work.  In this way we identify opportunities, and also better understand the pressures affecting our clients.

We see some relief in the price of commodities including gold, coal and dairy (at least next year) and are hopeful that manufacturing can maintain growth.  We know that some residential development is happening, but really cannot see a substantial driver for growth in that sector.  We have seen no benefit from any “stimulus package” and don’t expect to in our region.

So, will we keep concentrating on:

• Serving you our clients,
• mining – coal and gold, mostly because we love it and can see the up-side in the industry,
• water – cause we think it’s going to be “BIG”,
• rail ‘cause we love that too, and
• power ‘cause everyone needs it !

The AUSIMM is the principal institute representing professionals within the mining sector in Australia and New Zealand, with about 250 members in NZ. Cam Wylie was privileged to be elected Chairman of the New Zealand Branch of AUSIMM at the AGM in late August 2009.

The NZ Branch is historical, providing strong support to students, with excellent conferences and presence in the sector. With this background Cam considers it an honour to be elected to this position and looks forward to upholding the traditions of the group.

Mining is a cornerstone of the NZ economy producing over $2billion in export earnings, or 2 x the value of the wine industry combined. The historical importance of mining is represented in the crossed hammers in the fourth quarter of the shield in the New Zealand coat of arms (http://www.mch.govt.nz/coat-of-arms.htm).

New Zealanders can be found on almost any mine site in Australia, Asia, the Pacific and throughout the world. We produce excellent, qualified and skilled graduates sought for our technical abilities and “can do” attitude. One of RDCL’s goals is to export mine services from New Zealand.

AUSIMM is at the forefront of the awakening debate concerning the drive for productivity; the raising of national living standards; and the use of the vast asset base that is New Zealand’s mineral wealth.
